Appointments

SPRINGHEAD TENANTS AND RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

This organisation is run purely by a group of dedicated volunteers who were initially concerned about young people and the lack of youth provision in their area. We as an organisation were asked to come in to undertake a consultation with the young people of Thornton to determine what their needs and concerns were and how this could be moved forward with the help of STAR. During the consultation it was identified by Memo that the young people lacked basic skills, confidence and a whole variety of issues that entailed poor relationships with their community, police, school and significant others. From this initial consultation and the report produced STAR
was able to secure funding to develop a youth group. Memo was asked to develop the youth sessions incorporating the young people issues into informal activities. A lot of work is continually being implemented that boosts the young people confidence and self esteem.

A recent spin off from this was the development of accredited training packages that young people in Thornton can access. Currently 8 young people have successfully completed Youth Train accreditation for sexual health although more young people took part in the training but unfortunately because of their age their file were unable to be submitted. Currently were are on to a drug awareness programme with 10 participants aged 11-20. The reason the age range is so wide is due to the fact that
young people have identified across the board that this is an issue of importance to them. This work is on going as we meet with these young people twice a week where they identify their training needs.

BRADFORD YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP (BYDP)

We have worked with BYDP in a variety of capacities ranging from supervision and
management to providing training to its trainees. Within the training capacity we
have provided Open College Network (OCN) accreditation to many participants at
level 2 and 3 in Housing and Homelessness and Environment with young adults
(18-25). We have also provided non accredited training around ways of working
with young people and achieving a positive outcome, gender, anger management,
personal development and self esteem.

BRADFORD VOLUNTARY YOUTH ORGANISATION NETWORK (VYON) AND CONNEXIONS WESTYORKSHIRE

In partnership with the above two organisations Memo have provided not only the
voluntary sector but also the statutory sector with the opportunity to undertake
training around the connexion strategy and how it is being implemented locally.
We took this course and turn it into a fun and participative learning.

Introduction to connexions and assessment planning implementation and review
ran for 2 years with positive feedback from its participants. As part of this process
Memo have worked collectively with other connexions partners.

HMP LEEDS (ARMLEY PRISON) ALCOHOL AWARENESS

Memo in partnership with Carpe Diem Associates and the healthy living project delivered the alcohol awareness training to the prisoners of HMP LEEDS who have been convicted of an alcohol related offence or feel that alcohol is a real problem within their lives. The programme focuses on their history with alcohol identifying the issues that have brought them to where they are today. It also concentrates on triggers, health, family and future support. This is a very intense course which is run over 3 days with a break between day 2 and 3 which allows for reflection which assist the prisoners in identifying a future course of action. The course was repeated every two months with a maximum of 12 participants per course. Memo has assisted to train on 8 courses.

WORK WITH SCHOOLS

Memo has delivered a variety of short training session with school settings. These have included programmes around citizenship, self esteem, working with others, communication skills, anti-bullying, sexual health and relationships as well as anger management.

YOUTH INCLUSION PROJECT (YIP)

Memo has created a workbook with photocopierable exercises for use within one to one setting with young people. This has covered eight main areas:

• Self identity
• Communication skills
• Group dynamics
• Confidence building
• Personal presentation
• Relationships
• Health
• Education

This workbook is a tool used by youth inclusion workers to engage young people.

BRADFORD YOUTH SERVICE AND BRADFORD YMCA

Memo undertook a 6 month consultation commissioned by Bradford YMCA and
funded by Bradford Youth Service. The purpose of the research was to establish
what the current and future needs were of the young people of Idle and Thackley
aged between the ages of 8-21. The methods used to gather this information was
detached youth work, questionnaires, focus groups. We also added an element of
gauging the communities’ reaction to the young people of Idle and Thackley. To do
this we visited local schools, Police, old peoples homes, local MP’s and other young
people organisations within this area. This was finalised in the shape of a report
highlighting the findings and recommendations for the future.

Bradford Youth Service/ Voluntary Sector Conference 2005.

Memo was asked to provide 2x1 hour training sessions around domestic violence with the brief of providing the participants with practical ways of working with young people. For many workers working alongside young people, it is important that understanding an issue, putting it forward in an appropriate format and working with the young person agenda can be the make or the break of the working relationship.

Developed training course ran by Memo

Memo has moved in to another phase of developing courses and putting them out in to the mainstream for workers to book on to. One of our first courses was Alcohol and young people. This course was a great success with applicants from many different working sectors of the community. Because of the sheer success we were forced to put on a second date within 2 weeks of the first. This course looked at the growing problem of young people and alcohol, what the government are intending to do about the problem, motivational interviewing and practical ways of working with young people with binge drinking problems.
